What is Shared Ownership?

A way for first-time buyers to buy a home affordably.

You can buy a share between 25% and 75% of the full value of the home, normally with the help of a mortgage. You then pay a subsidised rent on the share retained by Metropolitan.

As you only need a mortgage deposit for your share (instead of the full market value), Shared Ownership makes buying more affordable. It also keeps monthly housing costs below what you’d pay if you bought the same property outright or rented it privately.

In the future, you can increase the share you own by buying some or all of the remaining shares in your Shared Ownership home (this is known as staircasing).
